Inaugural Sports Awards

n Friday 16th June, Furness Academy held their Inaugural Sports Awards evening. This first event of its kind saw students from across all years groups recognised for the sporting excellence and achievements. A different style of event than we have held before, began with a drinks reception from which students, parents, carers and family were led to their allocated seats on our cabaret style round tables. These tables were adorned with the most glittery tablecloths, flowers, sparkles and crystals. Our Director of Sport Mrs Amison began proceedings with an overview of the year and all that has been achieved.

She welcome professional footballer Georgie Stanway to the stage to present the awards to the students. Categories ranged from dedication and commitment in PE lessons, to showing outstanding work in curriculum areas and recognising our sports leaders. Yarlside Academy, St Georges School and Dane Ghyll school were also invited to pick up their awards for being chosen as Primary Schools of the Year by Mr Carswell, the School Games Organiser.

Our major awards were presented after a refreshment break, with nibbles and amazing freshly made cakes delivered to our tables.

The second half kicked off with the awards recognising student excellence in chosen sporting fields. These were for students who are excelling in a sport outside of school, many to national and international levels. We moved on to the highly contested Sports Team of the Year, won by the Year 7 rugby team who have had incredible success over the last 12 months. Our penultimate awards were the Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 Sports Performers of the Year. The Key Stage 4 award was handed to Morgan Burgess for his excellence in PE and sport this year. However, after much deliberation, the Key Stage 3 award could not be handed to just one student and was, therefore, presented to Finley Dutton-Rosconie and Matthew Roberts.

Before presenting our final award, Georgia took to the stage again to tell the gathered audience, about her journey, her aspirations and her achievements. Georgia was truly inspiring and a wonderful guest speaker.

The final award was the Furness Academy Sports Personality of the Year, awarded to Morgan Burgess, Year 10 for a multitude of reasons including dedication to PE, commitment to leadership, excellence in Rugby outside of school, playing for Warrington Wolves and just showing devotion to sport in all areas.

Many thanks to all those who came along to the evening, the feedback has been incredible and a huge well done to all those students who received awards during the ceremony.
